About the Book

Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkuhn As Told By A Friend (Vintage International) is a story about a German music composer, Adrian Leverkuhn. The book discusses everything about Adrian's life starting from his childhood, to his extremely successful career, to his tragic death. He was born in the early 20th century and in his determination to become the greatest musician of his time, he trades his soul to the devil in exchange for 24 years of success and prosperity as a music composer. Adrian loses his ability to be humane and becomes incapable of love. He gets the success and greatness he wished for but pays a heavy price for it.

The narrator of the story is Adrian's childhood friend, Zeitblom. He tells this story as an analogy between Adrian's life and how Germany seemed to have sold its soul to the devil by its barbaric crimes in the Second World War, but eventually faced brutal defeat.

Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkuhn As Told By A Friend (Vintage International) is written by Thomas Mann. This import edition was published by Vintage in 1999. The book is available in paperback.
