Request this bookTrain to Pakistan is a novel by Khushwant Singh that recounts the horrific and political events that took place during the partition of India and Pakistan in August, 1947 after India gained independence. The author not just provides his views into the political happenings of that time but also the common civilian aspects, depicting the horror that happened to people.
The remote village of Mono Majra, which lied in the border of India and Pakistan, did not pay heed to the ongoing partitioning. The Sikhs and Muslims in the village are unaffected by it but then, a money-lender from the village gets murdered. People focus their suspicion of this murder upon Juggut Singh, who is a gangster in that village. He is also in love with a Muslim girl.
The village being unaffected until that point, rises in rage when a train arrives to their village, bearing the dead bodies of Sikhs. This incident turns the village into a battlefield, with both the magistrate and police becoming futile to stop the enragement. With a religious riot that broke in the village, Juggut Singh now has to take the double task of bringing peace to the village and joining with the Muslim girl he is in love with. Train To Pakistan was published by Avalon Travel Publishing as Reprint edition in the year 1994. It is available in paperback.
