At the beginning of the fourteenth century, an ambitious sultan (Ala-ud-din Khilji), who calls himself the second Alexander , hears of a beautiful queen (Padmini) and becomes infatuated with her. He arrives at her doorstep in Chittor and lays siege to her fort. Padmini sets out to motivate the Rajput warriors to face the challenge bravely, but is ultimately forced to choose death over dishonour. In this moving retelling of the famed legend, the atmosphere and intrigues of medieval Rajput courts are brought alive. Told from Padmini s perspective, we cannot but be swept along with her as she grapples with the matter of her own life and death, even as she attempts to figure out what it means to be a woman in a man s world.
