In this thought provoking monograph, CK Lal maps out the complexities, vulnerabilities and inadequacies of the traditional concept of being a Nepali. The author then ‘thinks aloud’ about possibilities of constructing an accommodative Nepaliya or Nepalese identity suited to the needs of a pluralistic, modern, forward-looking and multicultural country. Possibilities of imagining an inclusive Nepaliya identity are explored with deliberations about name, essence, icons, institutions and structures of a country in the  process of being transformed from a ‘nation-state’ to ‘state-nation.’ Provocatively written, this monograph should be required reading for all those concerned about the future of Nepali identity.
