Challenges faced by libraries in Nepal

Did you know that out of the 900+ libraries in Nepal, only 25% have friendly infrastructures for the specially-abled? That's shocking, isn't it? There are many such issues that libraries all over Nepal face on a daily basis. Lack of funds from the government, lack of staff, lack of toilet facilities, lack of equipment in the libraries, and so on.

Above all of these issues, most libraries are missing out on one of the most basic aspects of a library- LACK OF NEW BOOKS.

In a 2022 survey of 227 libraries across the country, the average number of Nepali and English books available was 4,521. While the libraries in Gandaki province had the highest number, 6000+ book titles (on average), libraries in Province 1, Bagmati Province, and Sudur Paschim Province had only 3000-4000 book titles on average. Libraries in Madhesh Province and Lumbini Province had less than 3000 titles on average. Libraries in Karnali province being the lowest, had less than 500 titles on average.
