Thomas L. Wheelen

entered Officers Candidate School in the U.S. Navy. After completing OCS Tom was a Supply Corps (SC) - Lt. (SC) USNR - assistant supply officer aboard nuclear support tender (1957 to 1960). After serving in the Navy, he worked in various management positions at General Electric Co. from 1961 until 1965 while attending graduate school. Tom had a long, distinguished career as a professor. He began his teaching career at the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce, as an Assistant Professor, from 1968 to 1971. From 1971 to 1974, Tom was an Associate Professor and in 1974, he became a Professor. He held the Ralph A. Beeton Professor of Free Enterprise Chair from 1981 to 1985. Tom was Liaison Faculty and Consultant to the National Academy of the FBI Academy from 1972 to 1983. He was a visiting professor at Northeastern University (Summer 1979, 1977, and 1975); University of Arizona (1979 to 1980); and Trinity College - University of Dublin (Fall 1999). While at the University of Virginia, Tom developed many lifelong friendships. Subsequently, Tom was a Professor of Strategic Management at the University of South Florida (1983 to 2005). Tom was a distinguished author and enjoyed writing cases that had meaning to the students. Tom co-authored (with J.D. Hunger) 13 editions of Strategic Management and Business Policy 13th Edition (2011), Cases in Strategic Management and Business Policy 13th Edition (2011), Concepts in Strategic Management and Business Policy13th Edition (2011), Strategic Management and Business Policy International Edition 13th Edition(2011); and Essentials of Strategic Management, 5th Edition (2011). Tom authored 280 cases, appearing in over 83 text books and case books. Tom served on the Board of Directors of Adhia Mutual Fund, Society for Advancement of Management, and on the Editorial Board of SAM Advanced Management Journal where he was the Associate Editor. He served on the Board of Directors of Lazer Surgical Software, Inc, and Southern Management Association and on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Management and Journal of Management Case Studies, Journal of Retail Banking, Case Research Journal and Business Case Journal. He was Vice President of Strategic Management for the Society for the Advancement of Management, and President of the North American Case Research Association. Tom was a member of the Academy of Management, Beta Gamma Sigma, Southern Management Association, North American Case Research Association, Society for Advancement of Management, Society for Case Research, Strategic Management Association, and World Association for Case Method Research and Application.
