Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States from 1861 to 1865, led the Union during the Civil War and emancipated slaves in the south in 1863; shortly after the end of the war,
John Wilkes Booth assassinated him.
As an outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery, Lincoln won the nomination of the Republican Party in 1860, and people elected him later in that year. Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and promoted the passage of the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution in 1865.
