The massive cave complexes at the Baodigshan site near Dazu in the Sichuan region and its immense treasure trove of Buddhist sculpture and painting have gotten relatively little research compared to other Buddhist cave art in China. For the first time in English, the incredible works of art that have been kept secret in this remote area since the Song dynasty and that were motivated by the profound teachings of Esoteric Buddhism are now being unveiled. Professor Angela Falco Howard describes the iconography, symbolism, and hidden meanings in both the individual pieces and overall design of the caves in the pedagogic order intended by their architects using gorgeous color photographs and detailed line drawings.
