The author Ram Prasad Koirala was born in April 1954 in Kathmandu and grew up in Palpa, Nepal, He grew up under the loving tutelage of his grandmother but was separated from his birth mother when he was a toddler. As an engineer and specialist in water supply and sanitation, he worked for the government of Nepal (1980- 1982) and then served as a United Nations Volunteer in Laos (1982- 1984). After that, he pursued an exciting career with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for three decades, working in Vietnam (1984-1988), Indonesia (1988-2000), Timor Leste (2000-2003), Eritrea (2003-2008), and finally, in the Sudan (2008-2014).
While with UNICEF, Ram found to his surprise that his beloved grandma's inspirational teachings in his childhood paralleled UNICEF's worldwide advocacy of child survival and development, particularly as related to water supply and sanitation. On his retirement, he felt he should share his life's journey, hoping that it might be an inspiration to younger generations. In 2022, he published a memoir in Nepali titled "Meri Uni Ra Ma" () describing his grandmother's influence on his personal and professional life. Since the publication of the book through his maternal aunt, he came to know the reality of the situation of his mother's tragic circumstances of her infidelity and two years of sentence in prison for the crime she did not commit.
By penning Colossal Love: My Life's Journey', Ram relived his childhood memories without his mother, the tenderness of his grandmother, difficult and hitherto unknown realities surrounding his mother's desperation. It is not a fiction but an incredible factual narrative revealing, amongst others, the nexus between mother, child, and grandmother under trying circumstances.
Against the stage of his own upbringing, Ram reflects on the lives of his children, one of whom - daughter Aparna -is profoundly deaf. To provide the best possible opportunities for Aparna, Ram and his family migrated to Australia. He enjoys travelling, listening to music, and reconnecting with friends and colleagues. Most importantly, he enjoys spending time with his family and playing with his three grandchildren.
